Sensei Mark
Shichidan (7th DAN)
Mark Muranaka, Head Instructor
Professor Mark, a Shichidan (7th-degree black belt), was promoted to this esteemed rank on November 8, 2018, during the USJF Promotions Meeting in Seattle. His dedication to the sport and leadership within the judo community were further recognized when he was named President of the United States Judo Federation (USJF) later that year.
For decades, Professor Mark has been a cornerstone of Hawaii’s judo community, sharing his time, expertise, and passion for the sport. He played an instrumental role in establishing the judo program at the Mililani YMCA and continues to serve as an Assistant Instructor at the Kaimuki YMCA Judo Club. Previously, he was the Head Instructor at the Mililani Hongwanji Judo Club, a position he eventually passed on to his former student, Sensei Terry Otsuka. His unwavering dedication earned him the nickname “married to Judo,” as he balanced roles across multiple clubs while continuing his own training at the Shobukan Judo Club.
In addition to his instructional contributions, Professor Mark has held influential leadership roles in the broader judo community. He served as President of the Judo Black Belt Association of Hawaii (JBBAH) and as Vice-President of Hawaii Judo Inc. (HJI), further shaping the sport’s development and reach in the state.
Competitive Achievements:
- Gold Medalist at the 2001 USA Judo Senior National Championships in Orlando, Florida.
- Gold Medalist at the 2002 USA Judo Senior National Championships in San Diego, California.
- Bronze Medalist at the 2003 5th World Masters Judo Championships at the Kodokan in Tokyo, Japan.
Though his competitive career was cut short due to an eye injury, Professor Mark has remained deeply committed to teaching and mentoring the next generation of judokas, ensuring his legacy continues to inspire.
Outside of judo, Professor Mark is the owner of Muranaka Environmental Consultants, Inc., a company specializing in asbestos abatement for residential and commercial properties. His expertise in this field exemplifies his commitment to safety and quality in all areas of life.
Professor Mark’s lifelong devotion to judo, combined with his professional contributions, stands as a testament to his excellence, leadership, and enduring service to his community.
Sensei Shaena
Shodan (1st DAN)
Shaena Peralto, Assistant Instructor
Sensei Shaena’s journey in judo began at the young age of five, training under Sensei Mark. Her dedication and hard work have made her a formidable competitor, earning her multiple HJI State Championship titles and recognition as a 3-time Junior National Champion. Known for her tenacity, Sensei Shaena has often trained with “the big boys” and men, pushing her limits to develop unmatched strength, skill, and determination.
In 2016, Sensei Shaena took her passion for judo to the next level by founding the Judo program at Waianae High School. With the support of Waianae wrestling coach William Molina and Mililani Judo coach Jensen Hernandez, she successfully led the program through its beginning seasons in 2017 and 2018. Under her leadership, the team achieved the remarkable milestone of students placing at the State High School Championship in their very first year. Today, the Waianae High School Judo program continues to flourish under Coach Jensen Hernandez’s guidance.
Beyond the dojo, Sensei Shaena has built an impressive career as a professional semi-truck driver and serves as a lead CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) Instructor at Leeward Community College. She is also a proud alumnus of LCC, where she earned an Associate in Applied Science in Automotive Technology.
Sensei Dean, Guest Instructor
Head Instructor at the Mililani Seidokan Judo Club
Godan (5th DAN)
Sensei Dean Shiraki has been an integral part of the Judo community for many years. As the Head Instructor at the Mililani Seidokan Judo Club, he also lends his expertise to the Mililani YMCA Judo Club, working closely with Sensei Mark and Sensei Shaena to train and inspire the next generation of Judoka.
Previously, Sensei Dean served as the Instructor and Coach for the McKinley High School Judo Team. His impact extends beyond coaching; at every local tournament on Oahu, you can find him behind the computers, ensuring that the brackets for each weight division are smoothly and efficiently organized. His work begins long before the tournament day, as he oversees bracket pairings, verifies weight divisions, and handles numerous other critical tasks.
Sensei Dean’s dedication has made him an invaluable asset to the 50th State Judo Association and to Sensei Mark’s efforts in preparing students for tournaments. Together, they combine their knowledge of tournament play and techniques to guide both competitors and non-competitors alike.
In addition to his contributions to Judo, Sensei Dean is passionate about diving and fishing. His commitment to the sport and the community was recognized with his well-deserved promotion to Godan (5th DAN) in September 2014.
Sensei Randy, Guest Instructor
Sensei Randy’s journey in martial arts is deeply rooted in family tradition and passion. Inspired by his grandfather and uncles, who were avid judokas, he began his training alongside his brother at the Kaimuki YMCA Judo Club under the guidance of Sensei Mark. Sensei Randy’s path in judo has been shaped by a strong familial and cultural legacy.
Sensei Randy stepped away from the sport for several years. Recently, he has returned with renewed passion as his son, Aiden, begins his journey on the Mililani High School Judo team. This moment rekindled his love for the sport and gave him the opportunity to share his knowledge and experience with the next generation.
Sensei Randy’s return to judo is a testament to his dedication, blending his personal connection to the sport with a commitment to mentorship and growth. His story reflects a lifelong respect for the discipline and a desire to inspire future judoka.
